DAT 320 - the latest generation of DAT format
The DAT 320 is the seventh format generation of open standard DAT technology, providing enhanced capacity and performance to small and mid-size business environments that require affordable, reliable tape-based data protection, and a cost-effective upgrade from existing DAT 160 tape drives.
In July 2008, HP and Sony announced a joint development agreement for the DAT 320 format with the intention of separately creating products based on the format.
DAT 320 products were launched in November 2009 and are now available on the market with double the capacity of DAT160 products, at up to 320 GBs of capacity per tape. DAT320 also offers significantly higher backup speeds of up to 86 GB/hour (with data compression at 2:1) to reduce the backup window.
“Tape customers are concerned about outgrowing their existing tape drives do not want to switch away from a cost-effective and trusted technology like DAT...the doubled capacity of the DAT 320 will be an ideal choice for small to midsize businesses who have limited space for extra hardware.” Robert Amatruda, Research Director, IDC.
The HP/Sony announcement illustrates continued commitment by manufacturers to a growing opportunity in the tape market; the provision of cost-effective data archiving solutions for SMB’s.

“DAT 320’s ability to store more data in a given footprint can help to address financial costs, power usage and cooling floor space.“
